Burundi Health Informatics Association

The Burundi Health Informatics Association (BHIA), also known as Association Burundaise d’Informatique Medicale (ABIM) is an independent organization created to promote the application of Health Informatics in Burundi.

The goals of the association are as follows among others:

  1. To represent Burundi health informatics nationally and internationally, notably through the International Medical Informatics Association (IMIA)
  2. Stimulating appropriate conditions of service for health informatics professionals.
  3. Participating in the definition of standards of education and professionalism of health informatics in Burundi.
  4. Promoting human resource development in health informatics.

Cameroonian Health Informatics Society

The Cameroonian Health Informatics Society (CAHIS), also known as Société Camerounaise d’Informatique Médicale (SOCIM), is the Cameroonian body established to promote and health information activities in the country, with its current headquarters in Yaoundé Central Hospital, Faculty of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences.

Ghana Health Informatics Association

Ghana Health Informatics Association(GHIA®) is a professional body of health informatics experts and enthusiasts in Ghana.  The association engages in the planning, design, development,  deployment, and maintenance of safe eHealth solutions and also educates eHealth system users and consumers on its benefits, whilst upholding professional ethics and privacy.

GHIA's main activities include among others:

  1. Hosting leading peer-reviewed conferences, seminars, and training on contemporary topics in health informatics and ICT fields that promote health delivery outcomes and best practices.
  2. The association shares various experiences in national and international forums.
  3. The association holds outreach programs to health professional groups, regulatory bodies, and student groups.

Ivorian Society of Biosciences and Health Informatics

On the 15th of December 2007, the Ivorian Society of Biosciences and Health Informatics (ISBHI) was created in Côte d’Ivoire, a West African country of 17 million people. The ISBHI is a non-profit association whose main aims are to promote computer applications in health care through the organization of scientific meetings, health informatics educational efforts and to contribute to the development of information systems relevant and adaptable to the Côte d’Ivoire National Health system. The association is also known as Societe Ivoirienne de Biosciences et D’Informatique Medicale.

The Kenya Health Informatics Association

The Kenya Health Informatics Association (KeHIA) is a professional society legally registered by the Government of Kenya to promote the development and practice of biomedical informatics in Kenya solely aimed at continuous improvement of access to, and affordability of quality of healthcare services delivered to Kenyans.

KeHIA comprises of professionals drawn from the fields of medicine, information technology, computer science, public health, bioethics & law among others. Majority of its members are drawn from within Kenya with a growing number joining from outside Kenya.

Medical Informatics Association of Malawi

The Medical Informatics Association of Malawi (MIAM) aims to provide an organizational framework through which individuals currently working in healthcare-related information technology roles can advance their skills and share their knowledge with others. The main goal is to contribute to the improvement of healthcare provision in Malawi through the application of medical informatics principles.

Association Objectives

  1. To increase awareness and promote medical informatics as a means of improving patient care in Malawi.
  2. To share examples of systems that have worked successfully in sub-Saharan Africa and also systems that have failed, so that other parties can learn from the mistakes of others.
  3. To share tools that have been developed (both hardware and software, a repository of software such as LINUX, MySQL).
  4. To create a ‘virtual community’ of people who work in healthcare and are interested in medical informatics.

Uganda Health Informatics Association

The Uganda Health Informatics Association (UgHIA) is a professional society legally registered by the Government of Uganda to promote the development and practice of biomedical informatics in Uganda solely aimed at continuous improvement of access to, and affordability of quality of healthcare services delivered to Ugandans. UgHIA comprises of professionals drawn from the fields of medicine, information technology, computer science, public health, bioethics & law among others.

UgHIA is well placed to strengthen the health partnerships required to promote optimal utilization of Information, Communication (ICT), and Technology in the public and private health sectors in Uganda.

The South African Health Informatics Association

The South African Health Informatics Association (SAHIA), one of the oldest health informatics associations in Africa, was formed in 1982.

Among its goals and objectives:

  1. To represent South African Health Informatics nationally and internationally, notably through the International Medical Informatics Association (IMIA) of which SAHIA is a member.
  2. To promote and uphold the status of the Health Informatics profession by:
  3. Striving for the recognition of Health Informatics as a specialty registrable with professional health councils in South Africa
  4. Stimulating appropriate conditions of service for Health Informaticians
  5. Participating in the definition of standards of education and professionalism of Health Informatics at Universities, Schools of Public Health and Technical Universities
  6. Promoting human resource development in Health Informatics

The Mali Society of Biomedical and Health Information

The Mali Society of Biomedical and Health Information (SOMIBS) also known as Société Malienne d’Informatique Biomédicale et de Santé (SOMIBS), was created in March of 2005 to extend the activities of REIMICOM, the network of healthcare institutions for medical informatics in Mali.

REIMICOM was founded as a non-profit association in 2002 to regroup all hospitals and healthcare institutions in Mali and provide them with IT services (a private network with high internet bandwidth, a secure e-mail server, a Web portal with specific contents, and tools and coordination for distance medical education in cooperation with the RAFT project).

So far, REIMICOM and SOMIBS have been involved in the following activities:

  1. The development of distance continuing education for healthcare professionals since 2002,
  2. The promotion of teleconsultations and teleradiology since 2003,
  3. The organization of the first roundtable on ITC in health in November of 2002, with the support of the International Institute for Communication and Development (IICD) and the Ministry of Health,
  4. The organization of the national workshop on ITC in health in September of 2003, with the support of IICD and the Ministry of Health,
  5. Training activities in regional hospitals (120 professionals trained in the use of ICT in the 6 regions of Mali)

Rwanda Health Informatics Organization (RHIO) is a professional health information society of Rwanda that promotes the development and practice of biomedical informatics in Rwanda.

Corresponding members are from Algeria, Benin, Democratic Republic of Congo, Guinea, Madagascar, Senegal, Tanzania, Zambia, and Zimbabwe.
